1996

Ahhhhh the days of my youth. 12 years old. Life was pretty much still a great mystery to me. Took my PSLE and did quite well (226 aggregrate) considering i didnt really study much.

The main highlight of this year that changed my life has to be playing soccer for my primary school, Bedok Primary. Before this, soccer was just a hobby i played with my neighbours every evening where we used the gates of my neighbour’s houses as goal posts (they werent very happy) using $1.20 plastic balls bought from the mama shop. It was kampung soccer at its essence. The first game for the inter-primary school tournament was against East View Primary on their homeground. My not-yet-fully-developed balls shrank when we walked onto the pitch and realised they had half the school supporting them ferociously. I silenced the crowd in the first minute with my first touch of the ball resulting in a goal. I will never forget the feeling of shutting the crowd up and all my teammates running to celebrate the goal, my goal with me. Though we lost the game 5-1 in the end, this experience changed what was a hobby into a lifelong passion.
